How to Eliminate Refrigerator Odor

Uh oh. You forgot to throw out that gallon of milk before closing the restaurant for a long weekend. Or perhaps that forgotten bag of potatoes has rotted at the bottom of your crisper drawer.

While tossing these remnants is simple enough, sometimes they can leave a powerful odor behind that seems to permeate every inch of your refrigerator. Fortunately, with a little patience, you can eliminate refrigerator odor. Take a look at our step-by-step guide.

Step by Step Guide to Eliminate Refrigerator Odor

1. Unplug the refrigerator and remove everything inside

Even if you’ve tossed the smelly culprit, it’s important to empty the entire refrigerator. If you have a second refrigerator available, this will help you preserve your perishable items. If not, store perishable items in a cooler.

2. Wash the bins, drawers and shelves

Remove the bins, drawers and shelves and any other loose components. Wash each in the sink with warm, soapy water. For components that are particularly smelly, wipe with bleach and water. Allow the components to dry completely before returning to the refrigerator.

3. Wash the interior

Once the loose components have been removed and cleaned, you can clean the interior. We recommend using a mixture of baking soda and warm water (approximately one cup of baking soda for every gallon of water) and a sponge to thoroughly scrub the inside of the refrigerator.

4. Air the refrigerator out

This is by far the longest step, but definitely worth it for the best results — especially if the odor in your refrigerator is intense. Unplug your refrigerator and leave the door open. Let the refrigerator air out for at least one day. If the odor still persists, wipe down the interior of the refrigerator again and let air out.

Once you’ve effectively removed the odors, you can return your perishable items to your refrigerator.

Additional Tips to Eliminate Refrigerator Odor

Baking Soda

Place an open container or baking soda inside. This can help draw out and neutralize odors.

Vanilla Extract

Soak a few cotton balls in vanilla extract and place them inside your refrigerator.

Essential Oils

Similar to vanilla extract, soaking cotton balls in essential oils or using a reed diffuser can help eliminate odors.
