Commercial Oven Won’t Light: How to Troubleshoot

As a restaurant owner, your commercial oven is the heart of your business. So when your oven won’t light, you need a solution and fast. If you’re not sure where to start, here are three of the most common commercial oven issues, and how you can quickly and easily troubleshoot them.

1. The pilot light won’t stay on

If your pilot will light, but won’t stay on, this is likely caused by a thermocouple issue. You can inspect the problem by checking that the thermocouple is directly in the flame. If it isn’t in the flame, the device won’t get hot enough to open the safety valve. If the thermocouple is in the correct spot but won’t light, it may be defective or is worn out and needs to be replaced.

2. The thermostat is faulty

If your commercial oven is not getting hot enough or is getting too hot, there may be an issue with the thermostat. Sometimes, the thermostat may be uncalibrated, or it can simply be defective. You can check that your thermostat is calibrated by placing an accurate thermostat inside of the oven and setting it to a desired temperature. If the burner flames go out before the thermostat reaches the desired temperature, or if the thermostat reads a much different temperature than the number it is set for, it needs calibrating. Each thermostat is different so refer to your owner’s manual.

3. The capillary tube is broken or worn

If your oven still seems to be having temperature inconsistencies and the thermostat is fine then the bulb may be improperly placed. At the end of the capillary tube, there are clips that hold the bulb into place. This bulb is responsible for keeping the oven temperature even, but if it is not clipped into place properly, it can cause your oven to experience temperature inconsistencies.
